I accepted the role of campaign manager for my friend, J. Preston Hughes, when he ran for Congress in 1976. I was very inexperienced. Shortly thereafter, when I was in Korea on business 、at our hotel, I met a man from England who introduced me to the book, Constitution of Liberty by Friedrich A. Hayek. (It didn’t help much with the campaign. We lost to a Marriott.) I read it all. It was a difficult book to wade through, but I persisted and finished it. The most impressive concept that I have not forgotten and often used follows.
１９７６年にJ・プレストン・ヒューズが米国衆議院の候補者になったとき、私はキャンペーンマーネジャになりました。大変不経験者でした。すぐあと、仕事で韓国にいた時、ホテルで英国人に出会いました。彼はこのフリードリヒ・A・ハイエクが書いた本、「自由の条件」，を私に紹介してくださいました。 （キャンペーンにあまり役に立ちませんでした。あるマリオット氏に負けたのです。）全部よみました。読みにくいでしたが頑張って、最後まで読みました。忘れられない、たくさん使った、最も印象的な観念はつぎの文書です。
「The more men know, the smaller the share of all that knowledge becomes that any one mind can absorb.」 p.26
人類の知識が増えるにつれて，ある一人の人が吸収することができる知識の分量は小さくなってゆく。
「Compared with the totality of knowledge which is continually utilized in the evolution of a dynamic civilization, the difference between the knowledge that the wisest and that which the most ignorant individual can deliberately employ is comparatively insignificant.」 p.30
活動的な文明の発達において常に利用されている知識の総量と比較するならば，最も賢い人物と最も無知な者が意図的に使うことのできる知識の差は，比較的に小さなものである。
To explain in simple terms, if we compare the total amount of knowledge in the world to the size of the sun, what the most knowledgeable individual know might be compared to the size of the earth and what the least knowledgeable might know be compared to the size of the moon. Of course it is impossible to make precise measurements. Compared to the size of the sun, the knowledge difference between these two individuals (earth and moon) is insignificant. And God knows all that is to be known, not just of this world, but of the whole universe. The picture below helps us visualize these comparisons. Therefore when we question whether we should trust in man or trust it God the answer is simple.
簡単に説明すれば、例えとして世界のすべての知識は太陽の大きさだと比較すれば、最も賢い人物の知識は地球の大きくらいさしかありません。そして最も無知な者の知識は月の大きさしかないかも知りませんが、どちらも太陽の大きさと比べて比較的に小さなものであ って、差は殆どないのです。勿論正確にわたしたちは計ることは不可能ですが、下記の写真をご覧になるとこの観念を把握できると思います。 そして神様は知れることを全部しておられます、この世だけのことではなくて、神様は全宇宙のことをご存知なです。それであるからわたしたちは人間に頼るか神 様に頼るかを疑問するとき答えは簡単です。
The prophet Spencer W. Kimball in an Ensign article in the September, 1978 Ensign, page 3, wrote about similar things.

Experience in one field does not automatically create expertise in another field. Expertise in religion comes from personal righteousness and from revelation. The Lord told the Prophet Joseph Smith: “All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it.” (D&C 93:30.) A geologist who has discovered truths about the structure of the earth may be oblivious to the truths God has given us about the eternal nature of the family.
ある分野で経験があるから別の分野でもわけなくその道の専門家になれるかというと，そうではありません。宗教に関して言えば，専門的知識はその人の義しさ，啓示からもたらされます。主は，予言者ジョセフ・スミスに，「あらゆる真理，神の1置たみあし範囲に於て独立」(教義と聖約93：30)していると教えられました。地球の構造について多くの真理を発見した地質学者でも，家族の永遠性について神が私たちに与えておられる真理には気がつかないかも知れません。
If I can only make clear this one thing, it will give us a basis on which to build. Man cannot discover God or his ways by mere mental processes. One must be governed by the laws which control the realm into which he is delving. To become a plumber, one must study the laws which govern plumbing. He must know stresses and strains, temperatures at which pipes will freeze, laws which govern steam, hot water, expansion, contraction, and so forth. One might know much about plumbing and be a complete failure in training children or getting along with men. One might be the best of bookkeepers and yet not know anything of electricity. One might know much about buying and selling groceries and be absolutely ignorant of bridge building.
人はただ頭で考えただけで，神や神の道を見いだせるものではありません。自分が探究している王国を支配している法則に従う必要があります。このことだけでもはっきりと理解いただけるとしたら，確かな土台を築くことができたと言えるでしょう。鉛管工になろうと思えば，その仕事に関連のある法則を研究する必要があります。圧力やひずみ，変形，パイプが凍る温度，蒸気や熱湯を調節する原愚膨張率，収縮などについて知らなければなりません。ところで，鉛管に関する知識が豊富にあっても，子供の教育や人々との交際ではまったく駄目だということがあるかも知れません。また簿記には詳しいが，電気のことはさっぱり分からないということもあれば，食料品の売買には通じているが，橋を架ける知識は皆無だということもあるでしょう。
One might be a great authority on the hydrogen bomb and yet know nothing of banking. One might be a noted theologian and yet be wholly untrained in watchmaking. One might be the author of the law of relativity and yet know nothing of the Creator who originated every law. I repeat, these are not matters of opinion. They are absolute truths. These truths are available to every soul.
水素爆弾に関しては権威者であっても，銀行業務には無知のこともあるでしょうし，名の知れた神学者でありながら，その上時計の製造も上手にできるという人はいないでしょう。また，相対性理論を唱えた人でも，すべての法則・原理を創られた創造主については無知であったかも知れません。繰り返しますが，これは単なる考え方の問題ではありません。絶対的な真理です。これはすべての人に当てはまる真理です。
Any intelligent man may learn what he wants to learn. He may acquire knowledge in any field, though it requires much thought and effort. It takes more than a decade to get a high school diploma; it takes an additional four years for most people to get a college degree; it takes nearly a quarter-century to become a great physician. Why, oh, why do people think they can fathom the most complex spiritual depths without the necessary experimental and laboratory work accompanied by compliance with the laws that govern it? Absurd it is, but you will frequently find popular personalities, who seem never to have lived a single law of God, discoursing in interviews on religion. How ridiculous for such persons to attempt to outline for the world a way of life!
聡明な人ならば自分の希望する学問をすることができると思います。深い思索と努力さえすれば，どの分野であっても知識を得ることができます。高等学校の卒業証書を手にするためには小学校に入学してから12年かかり，大学の卒業学位を得るには普通さらに4年を要します。立派な医師になるにはそれからまだ25年近くもかかるのです。それなのに，法則に従って実際に生活してみなくて，どうしてもっと深遠な霊性を身に付けられるというのでしょうか。あなたは，神の律法のひとつも守っておらずに，宗教対談を行なっている人を見かけたことがあると思います。神の律法に従おうともせずに，世の人々に対して人生を説こうとしているのです。何と愚かしいことでしょうか。
And yet many a financier, politician, college professor, or owner of a gambling club thinks that because he has risen above all his fellowmen in his particular field he knows everything in every field. One cannot know God nor understand his works or plans unless he follows the laws which govern. The spiritual realm, which is just as absolute as is the physical, cannot be understood by the laws of the physical. You do not learn to make electric generators in a seminary. Neither do you learn certain truths about spiritual things in a physics laboratory. You must go to the spiritual laboratory, use the facilities available there, and comply with the governing rules. Then you may know of these truths just as surely, or more surely, than the scientist knows the metals, or the acids, or other elements. It matters little whether one is a plumber, or a banker, or a farmer, for these occupations are secondary; what is most important is what one knows and believes concerning his past and his future and what he does about it.
にもかかわらず，資本家や政治家，大学教授，ギャンブルクラブの所有者といった人々の中には，自分がある分野で人より優れていることで，まるで何でも知っているかのように思っている人がたくさんいます。人は，神の律法に従ってはじめて神御自身を知り，また神の計画とみ業を理解することができるのです。霊の世界は自然界が存在するように確かに存在します。けれども，この世の法則では理解することができません。セミナリーで発電機の作り方は学べませんね。同じように，医薬品の研究所で霊的なことに関する真理を学ぶことはできません。霊的な真理を学ぶには，霊的なことを扱う研究所に行き，そこにある設備を使って，定められている法則に従わなければなりません。そうすれば，科学者が金属や酸やその他の成分を知っているのと同じように，あるいはそれ以上に確かに，霊に関する真理を知ることができるのです。職業は二の次であって，鉛管工であれ銀行家であれ農業従事者であれ問題ではありません。最も大切なことは，自分の過去と未来について何を知っており，信じており，またそのために何を行なっているかということなのです。
