50 Japanese Phrases in 50 Minutes D. H. (Dee) Groberg published his book 50 Japanese Phrases in 50 Minutes in 1975. This booklet along with a sound tape was packaged together with the book and an audio tape. At the time, Dee was president of the International Education Research and Analysis Corporation (Interac). (As some of you may know Interac still exists in Japan today.) Later, 10,000 of these books entitled Japanese by Sight and Sound were sold to Japan Air Lines. Dee Groberg was called as the first president of the Tokyo South Mission in 1978 when he was 38 years old. Under the challenge and inspiration of newly called Seventy, Yoshihiko Kikuchi, who loved and followed President Spencer W. Kimball's call for increased success in missionary work, Dee implemented many innovations that led to record numbers of new converts (mostly male) in Japan. Upon returning home, Dee completed his Ph.D. at BYU. Urged on by Professor Dillon Inouye, his committee chairman, Dee wrote about his experiences as mission president in his Ph.D. dissertation which is published elsewhere on this website. Reading this dissertation gives me hope that there will again be a time when significant numbers of converts will choose to join the Church in Japan in the future.
