A Christmas Story in Japan,日本でのクリスマスストーリ

We were living in Tokyo, Japan in 1970. Our son, Brent, was five. Our daughter, Angie, was three, and our daughter, Nancy, was one year old. Nancy was born in Japan.

1970 年に私たちは日本の東京に住んでいました。息子のブレントは５才でした。アンジは三才で､ナンシーは一才でした｡　ナンシは日本で生まれました。

Brent and Angie slept in a tatami room. They used futons. We still have those futons in Utah.

ブレントとアンジは畳の部屋で寝ていました。布団を使っていました。私たちはまだその布団をユタでもっています。

It doesn’t snow often in Tokyo. This Christmas, we bought a bicycle for Brent. We put the bicycle outside in the backyard. Christmas morning, we awakened the children. We asked Brent to look outside. We wanted him to see his bicycle.

東京ではほとんど雪が降りません。クリスマスプレゼントとして自転車をブレントのために買っていました。自転車を外の庭に置いてありました。クリスマスの朝､子供をおこしました。ブレントに外を見るように言いました。自転車を見つけて欲しがったからでした。 

He opened the shoji door. He didn’t see the bicycle, but he saw the snow.  There wasn’t much snow. It wasn’t very deep. But it covered the backyard with a beautiful whiteness.

ブレントはしょうじを開きました。自転車を見ませんでしたが雪を見ました。余り沢山はありませんでした。余り深くなかった。しかし美しい白さで庭の全部被っていました。 

Happily, he said, “Oh!  I prayed for snow last night”

嬉しい声で､ブレントは、「おお！ゆうべ雪が降るようにいのりました」と叫びました。
